Strategic Plan

Illinois Leadership Center’s Contributions to Campus Strategic Goals
The Illinois Leadership Center prepares our exceptional students to be leaders who will transform the world and conquer challenges of the twenty-first century. Our distinctively dynamic and interdisciplinary programs align well with campus strategic goals. Moreover, our services meet the needs of a diverse student population and aid in the recruitment and retention of students. The preparation for leadership is among the driving campus goals. The Illinois Leadership Center contributes to campus strategic goals in the following ways:

Leadership for the 21st Century

  • We plan to develop an Undergraduate Research in Leadership Program that will culminate in students presenting their findings or papers at an annual symposium.
  • We plan to incorporate the Leadership Certificate as an option in meeting honors requirements for the Colleges of Business and Applied Health Sciences.
  • We have begun to establish connections with the campus honors programs to facilitate students learning about leadership across disciplines.
Academic Excellence
  • We have begun to incorporate multi-cultural competencies into each i-program to prepare students to lead in a diverse and global society.
  • We have committed to developing concrete leadership development learning outcomes for first-year students; these foundational outcomes will set the stage for building leaders as part of the Illinois experience.

Breakthrough Knowledge and Innovation

  • Illinois Leadership is already an interdisciplinary program that connects all academic units and serves students from each discipline.
  • With investment in a coordinated academic program, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will lead its peer institutions in interdisciplinary leadership education.
  • By engaging with the Chancellor’s Task Force for Civic Commitment, the Illinois Leadership Center can outline skill development training and opportunities that enhance a student’s experience as an engaged citizen leader.
  • We plan to incorporate a civic commitment requirement to earn an Illinois Leadership Certificate.

Transformative Learning Environment

  • The Illinois Leadership Certificate Program integrates academic and co-curricular education by creating a learning environment that combines classroom experiences and experiential skill development opportunities with an individualized professional-to-student leadership coaching relationship.

Access to the Illinois Experience

  • We will continue to offer i-programs to any student at no charge; this will ensure all students have equal access to essential leadership skill development and education opportunities.
  • We propose to increase the number of i-programs we provide to meet the needs of our students.
  • We will expand existing partnerships with campus cultural houses to better recruit and retain underrepresented students at Illinois and within the Leadership Certificate Program.
